The following year, the tents were up by dusk when the first curious locals drifted in. A few performers were changing their clothes and rehearsing as Ettie sighed contentedly by the ticket booths.

“You’d better stay wake if you’re to sell those,” said Art, his voice making her jump.

“I was lost in my own world,” she laughed, embracing him. His skin still smelled of soap.

“The clowns will have a difficult time tonight; Markus’ ankle hasn’t healed,” said Art pensively.

“Oh dear,” said Ettie, “tell him to put it in a pail of ice.” Art nodded and turned to leave. “Oh,” called Ettie, “remind Penny she’s to teach me more of the snake-dancing tomorrow.” Art nodded.

“Oh, and Art,” she called again, a smile forming at the corner of her lips, “tell her we shall see her later.” As she watched him tip his hat and saunter away, she hummed a merry tune.
